              JUDGE'S AND SCORER'S INFORMATION

IMPORTANT RULES NOTIFICATION
By:  Scott Snape, Chairman of the AWSA Rules Committee
22
 September, 2009
Some tournament sponsors have allowed skiers to ski more than one classification of tournament at a time which is in violation of AWSA Rule 1.02. This rule states: "...A skier may not ski in more than one class in the same event in the same round at one tournament and may not ski more than three rounds in an event at a tournament..."

Examples include but are not limited to: skiing a round in slalom, Class C, until the skier misses and then letting them continue that round under class F. Skiing a round in class C and then, if the skier does not like their score, switching the classification for that round to class F.

It is the intention that a skier declares which class he is skiing for that round before he takes to the water. Changes after the fact will not be allowed.

3-SEGMENT JUMP TIMING WITH PERFECT PASS
The following sentence has been added to paragraph 9.09 in the 2009 edition of the AWSA rule book (Jump Section):   Timing will be required to be recorded in three segments of 52m, 30m, and 41m; however, two segment timing will be controlling.
This means as boat judges we will be submitting 3 times from the boat for each jump attempt and the scorers will be recording the times. WSTIMS will compute the addition of the first two segments and report just two times. The reasoning for all of this can be found on the USA-WS website.
If you are using Zero Off (ZO) as the speed control system this will be easy with the existing course set-up. With Perfect Pass Stargazer (PPSG), set as described below, it will also be easy with the existing course set-up. If you are using Perfect Pass Classic you will need to add an additional set of buoys to your course. Be smart, use ZO or PPSG.
Jerry Bautsch describes how to set your boat to use PPSG:  Stargazer, when in the single magnet mode for slalom and jump, only requires a magnet to start the timing course. When in the multi magnet mode, it needs all the magnets for timing in both slalom and jump events. In single magnet mode for jump, the 3 segment times will be recorded but not in multi magnet mode.
PP Classic does not have the capability to record 3 segment times and requires magnets at each set of gates to time. So PP Classic is similar to Stargazer in multi magnet mode. It needs to be stressed that Stargazer should be used in single magnet mode in order to record 3 segment jump times and to minimize the number of needed magnets.

WSTIMS 2009 release now available
2 June, 2009
The 2009 release of WSTIMS Release 3.56 is now finalized and available for download now and usage.
IMPORTANT
-- there are a couple of important differences this year that will affect just about everybody using WSTIMS, so be sure to review the "What's New" material in the User Guide.  There are several changes that affect all officials; judges, scorers, drivers, and all others and how results and information they will need to begin inputting into WsTIMS. It is of the utmost important that scorers should be entering all their officials in each event as this is how USA Waterski will be getting their information on what officials get credit. The WSTIMS reporting is now all paperless. All officials need to familiarize themselves with the 2009 changes that are in the WESTIMS 3.56 What's New Section.

Chief Scorer's you must download, install and use the new release 3.56,
procedures for submitting WSTIMS tournament results:

  • All tournaments should send the entire .LZH (Example: 08C000C.LZH) file to Melissa Peterson, Seeding Committee Rep, Melissa will forward:
    1 - the entire .LZH to AWSA Headquarters, to Competition & Events;
    2 - the .html scorebook to Jerry Woodard, for posting of tournament results to the South Central Web site;
3 - the non-.html boat time information to Jerry Bautsch and EVP Bob Mayhew
(drive names are in the non-.html file but do not appear on the Web posted boat times).

WATCH YOUR SLALOM GATES!!
By Bob Mayhew, EVP
28 January 2008

In a moment of insanity the AWSA Board of Directors approved the use of the IWSF rule for going through the entry gate in the slalom course. That means that slalom judges will need to evaluate the position of the ski as it passes over the right-hand entry gate according to the diagram below. You can count on an increase in the number of contested gate calls and those “who never miss their gates” will be at the head of the line.

All slalom skiers need to begin their practice sessions this season with this ruling in mind. Officials, get some body armor and be ready to hear that famous statement:
“What in the #&@ do you mean I missed my gate!!???”

A skier shall be judged as missing the entry or exit gate when the center of the ski passes to the outside of the center of the gate buoy as shown in the diagram.

Message From AWSA Board Of Directors Concerning Driving Issues
Jeffrey D. Smith
Chairman
AWSA Board of Directors

As you may know, there has been much recent discussion about the failure of several tournament drivers and officials to follow AWSA Rule 1.12 concerning slalom times. Data from several tournaments shows that some drivers are providing consistently (and intentionally) slow driving patterns in violation of our rules. Examples of recent Technical Committee analyses of tournaments, including those in the South Central Region, may be reviewed at: http://www.awsasouth.com/boattiming/reg_timming.htm

This type of driving needs to be corrected ASAP, with all drivers and officials seeking to “set the standard” for driving throughout the nation in both boat paths and boat times.  With that said, our officials need to adhere to what is mandated in our rules at all times. Both fast times and slow times are for the tolerance of wind, skier abilities, etc., NOT ratings or soon to be rankings lists.

It is important for all officials to strive for actual times at ALL tournaments in the Region regardless of classification of C, E, L, and R.

In this effort, it would be appreciated if you would send this memo to all drivers in your region to ensure they are aware of this issue. On behalf of the AWSA Board of Directors, your help in meeting this standard is important and appreciated.

Clarification Regarding Multi-Round Events
The International Water Ski Federation and USA Water Ski/American Water Ski Association have been allowing tournaments (Class IE, E, L or R) in excess of three rounds. These tournaments are still considered an exception and accordingly, a request must be made. However an automatic exception will be granted. Further, the chief judge is to submit a report to the Rules Committee chairman. As a condition of granting this blanket exception, no more than three qualifying rounds may be held that do not utilize an elimination-based format. Rounds subsequent to round three must be elimination-based, and the elimination must be significant for the rounds subsequent to round three to retain the tournament classification (IE E, L or R). Should a skier produce a score in a round subsequent to round three that exceeds the skier’s best performance in any of the initial three rounds, the scorer is to separately notify USA Water Ski and the seeding representative of the score so that this score is included in the various ranking lists.

The “IDEAL BUCKET”……..
By Bob Mayhew, EVP
8 June 2007

To all drivers, I’m sure that you have heard this term by now: the Ideal Bucket = +/- 0.02 seconds from an actual time in the slalom course. Jerry Bautsch and I have been receiving the boat timing statistics from various tournaments in the SCR this spring and I am impressed. I have reviewed many sets of outstanding driving. I want to compliment all of you on a job well done. Please, keep it up!
There is a link below to some data from a tournament on the east coast.  Now, keep in mind that Tropical Storm Barry visited this tournament site on the day in question with some rain and 20-30 mph winds with additional gusts.  These were some tough conditions but there is a driver over there whose initials are “Z.O.”  Check out this data; does he have the boat dialed in or what!!!!!!
