How you can measure the latest slalom buoy settings

Dave Island from the Princeton Lakes in north Texas was part of the team that promoted and tested the most current recommendations for skier buoys in the slalom course.  Those recommendations were accepted by the AWSA Board of Directors in January of 2005 and are printed in the current rule book under 8.09(c).

The recommended size is a 20 cm diameter with 10 cm above the water line (see below):

The left and center photos show measuring height above the water line and diameter and in the right photo the right hand gate is the new size; left gate is former, larger size.

A piece of plywood with a 20 cm square cut-out along with a 20 X 10 cm cut-out on the bottom of the piece serves the purpose of measuring these buoys quite well as is seen above.

For many skiers this change would not seem significant but for very short line skiers it may help to minimize that “thump” we often hear as the skier “kisses” the buoy.

Good luck with your adjustments.
