SO, YOU WANT TO GO TO REGIONALS; HOW DO YOU QUALIFY?
By Bob Mayhew, EVP
24 April 2008

Here is the process; it can get complicated so read through all of the possibilities.
These qualifications are in your SCR Guide, page SC46, and under Policies and Procedures on this website.  Again, read them slowly and carefully.

Regionals Entry Qualifications and Skier Seeding

All skiers will be allowed entry if they are qualified at Level 5 or above on the National Ranking List.
Those persons qualified in two events may also ski their third event.

Background information for the above:

     1.  Advancement to Regionals will be based on the Nationals Rankings List for the SCR as of the Cut-off Date (COD) on the Friday of the SCR Junior Development Tournament but not more than 21 days before the start of the current Regional Tournament.  (In 2008, this will be Friday, July 11)

     2.  At the COD the Rankings List Average of the last ranked skier in each division in the S, T,
and J and Overall will be established as the Cut-off Average (COA).

     3.  After the COD, skiers may still gain entry to Regionals in any event or Overall through two (2) Last Chance Qualifying methods (LCQ’s):

         A.  Any skier who records a score EQUAL TO OR ABOVE THE COA at any State Championship, or at any class C and above tournament between the COD and the start of the Regional Tournament.

         B.  Any skier who places in the top three at any three-event SCR State Championship or top five in the SCR Junior Development tournament.(1/08)

Regionals are to be seeded by the Seeding Committee. (1/89)

GUIDE ANNOUNCEMENT FEES ARE PAST DUE!
By Bob Mayhew, EVP
19 April 2008
For all of those sites that advertised their tournaments in the 2008 SCR Guide the fee of $60 per announcement is now PAST DUE. Please have your treasurer send a check for the appropriate amount to Kathy Ives, SCR Treasurer, at 1707 Latigo Trace, Round Rock, TX 78681. Please pay this bill as soon as possible and certainly no later than 15 May 08. After that date delinquent sites may have their scorebooks held from processing until the fees are paid.
WSTIMS - Note for 2008 Season
There are no new AWSA Rules affecting scoring for 2008, and so this latest WSTIMS release 3.54 may continue to be used to score AWSA tournaments through the spring of 2008. An updated WSTIMS release should be out sometime later this spring, which will include the new tables needed to score tournaments with 09 sanction prefixes which begin in late August. That new release will also implement the timing rules for the new IWSF 3-segment jump timing course.
Until that new release becomes available, users with class L or R Jumping events should print and follow the jump timing tables which can be found in the 2008 edition of the IWSF Rulebook.

Chief Scorer's procedures for submitting WSTIMS tournament results:

  • 1st-- it is imperative that the tournament sponsors and scorers download new Entry List Templates prior to ALL tournaments held after August 18. 2007, with an 08 sanction number.
  • 2nd-- All tournaments should send the entire .LZH (Example: 08C000C.LZH) file to Melissa Peterson, Seeding Committee Rep, Melissa will forward:
    1 - the entire .LZH to AWSA Headquarters, to Competition & Events;
2 - the .html scorebook and boat times, to Jerry Woodard, for posting of tournament results and timing stats to the
         South Central Web site;
3 - the non-.html boat time information to Jerry Bautsch and EVP Bob Mayhew
(drive names are in the non-.html file but do not appear on the Web posted boat times).

WATCH YOUR SLALOM GATES!!
By Bob Mayhew, EVP
28 January 2008

In a moment of insanity the AWSA Board of Directors approved the use of the IWSF rule for going through the entry gate in the slalom course. That means that slalom judges will need to evaluate the position of the ski as it passes over the right-hand entry gate according to the diagram below. You can count on an increase in the number of contested gate calls and those “who never miss their gates” will be at the head of the line.

All slalom skiers need to begin their practice sessions this season with this ruling in mind. Officials, get some body armor and be ready to hear that famous statement:
“What in the #&@ do you mean I missed my gate!!???”

A skier shall be judged as missing the entry or exit gate when the center of the ski passes to the outside of the center of the gate buoy as shown in the diagram.

The “IDEAL BUCKET”……..
By Bob Mayhew, EVP
8 June 2007

To all drivers, I’m sure that you have heard this term by now: the Ideal Bucket = +/- 0.02 seconds from an actual time in the slalom course. Jerry Bautsch and I have been receiving the boat timing statistics from various tournaments in the SCR this spring and I am impressed. I have reviewed many sets of outstanding driving. I want to compliment all of you on a job well done. Please, keep it up!
There is a link below to some data from a tournament on the east coast.  Now, keep in mind that Tropical Storm Barry visited this tournament site on the day in question with some rain and 20-30 mph winds with additional gusts.  These were some tough conditions but there is a driver over there whose initials are “Z.O.”  Check out this data; does he have the boat dialed in or what!!!!!!

 “Z.O.” Timing Stats

ALL-DIVISION HANDICAPPING
The ZBS system scores on a continuous scale from 0 buoys to the best scores recorded, so special handicapping strategies are no longer needed. Even when divisions have different maximum boat speeds, the difficulty of the same score recorded in different divisions is very similar.
